Mini Implants
Mini implants are surgically positioned in the mouth to stabilize dentures. This procedure involves the use of an anesthetic for patient comfort. Mini implants are typically used in the lower jaw. These comparably small implants are not designed exactly the same as conventional implants that are meant to have replacement teeth connected to them in the form of an abutment and crown.
Mini dental implants contain a ball on exposed ends. The dentures are kept in place with the use of these balls and O-rings. This strategic approach ensures the dentures are held securely in position yet also presents the opportunity to remove them for cleaning.
The procedure necessary for the placement of mini implants is not much different from that required for traditional implants. The main difference is the mini implants are smaller so the procedure is not as invasive, requires less time and doesn’t lead to nearly as long of a recovery period. The dentist makes incisions in the gums then drills diminutive holes within the jaw bone to accommodate posts. The gums are sutured shut around these posts on the same day.
